On November 26 2013 the first sunrise periods for a number of new generic top-level domains (gTLDs) officially opened, with public registration commencing on January 29 2014. Below we present a snapshot of gTLD registration activity 11 months on.
The following figures reflect the official programme status as reported on December 1 2014:
- Total applications submitted in first round – 1,930
- Total scripts represented across applications – 12
- Number of applications completed/delegated – 444
- Number of applications withdrawn – 361
- Applications that will not proceed/not approved – 53
Trademark community engagement
On November 18 2014 the Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH) revealed that, to date:
- 33,902 trademarks had been submitted to the TMCH;
- 1,181 trademark registrations had expired;
- 50.61% of marks had been submitted for multiple years;
- 87.51% of submissions had been registered by agents;
- 97.5% of trademark submissions had been verified;
- registrations had come from 104 countries, with submissions covering 119 jurisdictions; and
- 112,943 claims notification had been sent out to trademark holders.
